Best plants for apartment — hero illustration

Apartment plants need to thrive in indoor conditions: lower light, drier air, fluctuating temperatures, and limited floor space. The picks below combine forgiving species (won't die after one missed watering) with compact growth (won't outgrow a studio in six months). Most are also non-toxic — important for shared spaces with pets or guests.

Care tip

Indoor air is typically 40-50% humidity year-round; many tropical houseplants prefer 60%+. Group plants together to create a microclimate, or run a small humidifier in winter when heating dries the air below 30%.

Common questions

Which plants are best for a small apartment?

Pothos, snake plant, and ZZ plant are top picks — they tolerate low light, irregular watering, and stay compact. Spider plants and pothos also propagate easily, so one plant becomes several.

What plants survive an apartment with no windows?

ZZ plant and snake plant tolerate the lowest light conditions of any popular houseplant, including rooms with only artificial light. Both can go 2-3 weeks without water.

Are these plants safe for cats and dogs?

Some are not — pothos and ZZ plant are mildly toxic to pets if chewed. Spider plant, prayer plant, and most palms (parlor, areca) are pet-safe.

How often should I water apartment plants?

Less than you think. For most apartment-friendly species, water only when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry. Apartment humidity is low but overwatering kills more houseplants than underwatering.

Do apartment plants need fertilizer?

Light feeding spring through autumn (diluted balanced fertilizer once a month) is plenty. Skip fertilizer in winter when growth slows.
