Bitter defined

Stimulates digestion via the bitter taste reflex.

II

The definition

Plants with intensely bitter compounds that trigger digestive secretions when sensed on the tongue. Taken 10-20 minutes before meals as drops or tonic. Cornerstone of European and Ayurvedic digestive medicine.

Mechanism

Bitter receptors on the tongue and gut signal the vagus nerve, increasing gastric acid, pancreatic enzymes, and bile. Tasting matters — encapsulated bitters lose most of the effect.
