Demulcent defined

Soothes irritated mucous membranes.

II

The definition

Plants rich in mucilage that form a protective coating on inflamed mucous membranes — particularly throat, stomach, intestines, and urinary tract. Provides symptomatic relief in dry coughs, gastritis, ulcers, and cystitis.

Mechanism

Long-chain polysaccharides hydrate and form a hydrocolloidal film over irritated epithelium, reducing nociceptor activation and giving tissue time to heal.
