Tannin defined
— Polyphenols that bind and precipitate proteins.
II
The definition
Polyphenolic compounds that bind to and precipitate proteins. Responsible for the astringent taste and effects of strong tea, oak bark, and witch hazel. Used to tighten tissues, stop bleeding, and reduce inflammation.
Mechanism
Form cross-links with proteins on mucous membranes and skin, creating a protective layer that reduces fluid loss, capillary permeability, and microbial colonisation.
