Astringent defined

Tightens and tones tissues.

The definition

Plants rich in tannins that contract and tighten mucous membranes and skin. Used topically for wounds and externally for hemorrhoids, internally for diarrhoea, excessive menstrual bleeding, or bleeding gums.

Mechanism

Tannins precipitate surface proteins, creating a protective layer that reduces fluid loss, capillary permeability, and microbial colonisation.
