Emollient defined

Softens and soothes skin.

The definition

Plants used externally to soften, smooth, and protect skin. Indicated in dry skin, eczema, sunburn, and as a base for other actives. Largely overlap with demulcents but applied topically.

Mechanism

Fixed oils and mucilage form a protective lipid layer, reducing transepidermal water loss and shielding from irritants.
