PlantSage is built on the work of upstream botanical databases, scientific authors, and people who quietly send in corrections and folk-remedy transcriptions.
Upstream data sources
Most of our 6,178 plants started life in one of these databases. We import, normalise, dedupe, and cross-link — but the underlying work is theirs. Please cite them too when you cite us.
Open botanical database — taxonomy, common names, edible flags, basic cultivation. CC-BY 4.0.
Source of baseline plant entries (~5800 species imported).
Global plant API based on TDWG taxonomic data — distributions, growth specs, multilingual common names, images.
Enrichment layer for distributions + energetics + growing data.
Public-domain plant photography (CC-BY-SA where applicable).
Source of hero images for species where editorial photography isn't available yet.
European Medicines Agency + World Health Organization herbal monographs.
Source for clinical dose corridors, safety, and high-confidence medicinal claims.
Watercolor map tile provider.
Distribution maps on plant + atlas pages.
Claude Haiku 4.5 — content generation from structured data.
AI-assisted description / cultivation prose where editorial copy doesn't exist yet. See methodology.

Coding & infrastructure
PlantSage runs on Cloudflare Pages (edge runtime), Neon (Postgres), Prisma (ORM), Next.js 14 App Router, and a small handful of focused open-source libraries.
