Chinese indigo

Chinese indigo, scientifically known as Indigofera decora, is a deciduous shrub native to the south-central and southeast regions of China and Japan. This plant thrives in full sun and prefers moist, well-drained soil that is light (sandy) or medium in texture. It is hardy in zones 5-7 and grows to about 1 meter in height. Chinese indigo is both edible and ornamental, with its seeds being the part used for culinary purposes. The seeds can be consumed raw or cooked and are often prepared by boiling to add flavor to dishes. Its distinctive feature lies in its attractive foliage and vibrant flowers, making it a valuable addition to gardens seeking both beauty and utility. Notably, Chinese indigo has been introduced into KwaZulu-Natal, New South Wales, Queensland, and Sri Lanka, where it has adapted well to temperate regions with similar climates. While the plant is not medicinal, it serves as a nitrogen fixer and adds a pleasant fragrance to the garden.
