Rubefacient defined

Warms by drawing blood to the skin.

The definition

Plants applied topically to redden the skin by drawing blood to the surface. Used for muscle aches, joint pain, and cold extremities. Felt as warming or burning.

Mechanism

Mild irritation triggers vasodilation; capsaicin acts on TRPV1 receptors, causing warming sensation and circulation increase.
