Skunk Cabbage

Skunk Cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus) is a distinctive perennial herb native to the eastern United States and southeastern Canada. It thrives in moist to wet environments such as swamps, marshes, and along stream banks. Known for its strong odor, which attracts flies and other insects that aid in pollination, Skunk Cabbage can be found from Connecticut to Wisconsin, with a more extensive native range including parts of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Ontario. This plant is valued both as an ornamental due to its unique appearance and as an edible source; its leaves and roots are sometimes used in traditional cuisine. Thriving in full or partial sun, Skunk Cabbage prefers light, medium, or heavy soils with a pH between 4 and 7, making it adaptable to various growing conditions while remaining a hardy perennial in zones 4-8.
