Antitussive defined
— Suppresses cough.

The definition
Plants that reduce the cough reflex. Useful in dry, non-productive coughs that disrupt sleep or healing. Should not be used to suppress productive coughs that are clearing infection.
Mechanism
Mucilage coats irritated airway receptors (demulcent action); some constituents act centrally on the cough center.
