Laxative defined
— Promotes bowel movement.

The definition
Plants that relieve constipation. Three classes: bulk-forming (psyllium), osmotic (mostly inorganic), and stimulant (senna, cascara). Stimulant herbal laxatives should be short-term only.
Mechanism
Bulk-formers absorb water and distend the colon; stimulants (anthraquinones) directly trigger peristalsis; osmotics retain water in the lumen.
