Mucilage defined
— Sticky polysaccharide gels.

The definition
Slippery polysaccharide gels that absorb water and form protective coatings. Found in marshmallow root, slippery elm, flaxseed, plantain leaf. Soothe inflamed mucous membranes and slow stomach emptying.
Mechanism
Long-chain polysaccharides hydrate to form a viscous protective film over irritated epithelium and slow nutrient absorption.
