Sedative defined
— Promotes sleep and slows arousal.

The definition
Plants that reduce nervous system arousal and promote sleep. Distinct from nervine relaxants in degree — sedatives are stronger and primarily indicated for insomnia rather than daytime anxiety.
Mechanism
GABAA receptor modulation (valerian's valerenic acid, kava's kavalactones), adenosine pathway activation, or melatonin-like effects.
