The definition
Plants applied topically to wounds, ulcers, burns, and cuts to promote healing. Often combine antimicrobial, astringent, and tissue-stimulating effects.
Mechanism
Antimicrobial action prevents infection; tannins reduce bleeding and form a protective layer; specific constituents (allantoin in comfrey) stimulate cell proliferation.
