Diuretic defined
— Increases urine output.
II
The definition
Plants that increase urine volume. Used for fluid retention, urinary tract complaints, and as adjuncts to elimination protocols. Differ from pharmaceutical diuretics in tending to spare potassium (nettle, dandelion).
Mechanism
Direct renal action via flavonoids and aquaretic constituents, plus increased renal blood flow. Some, like dandelion leaf, supply enough potassium to offset losses.
