— Pregnancy-safe herbs — and what to avoid throughout pregnancy.
Pregnancy dramatically changes which herbs are appropriate. Emmenagogues (herbs that stimulate menstruation), strong purgatives, and herbs with abortifacient history are all contraindicated. Most herbs labelled 'safe' here are safe at culinary doses; therapeutic doses should always be discussed with a midwife or clinician familiar with herbal medicine. First-trimester caution is highest for any new herb.
Always consult a qualified clinician, veterinarian, IBCLC, or midwife before introducing any herbal preparation. If toxic exposure is suspected, contact the appropriate poison control hotline immediately.
Tolerated by pregnant individuals at typical doses. Always start low.
Context-dependent. Reduce dose, watch for reactions, or use only under practitioner guidance.
Known toxic or strongly contraindicated for pregnant individuals.
